Thrilling Mysteries to Read for Halloween: New Releases You Can’t Miss

Despite not being an avid reader of thrillers, I often find myself gravitating towards darker themes around October, so today's blog post is devoted to book recommendations for Halloween. If you are looking for spine-chilling books this season, read on!

I was delighted to find out that BookBub, a platform offering great deals on bestselling ebooks, has curated an excellent list of newly released seasonal reads.

Among the books, Society of Lies by Lauren Ling Brown piqued my interest. This novel, a selection of Reese's Book Club, is set in Princeton where the protagonist, Maya, returns for her sister Naomi's graduation, only to discover that she has died.

The description for Society of Lies reminds me of intriguing college mysteries such as The Secret History by Donna Tartt or The Lessons by Naomi Alderman, both of which I loved. This novel has big boots to fill! 😁

The second book I'm tempted to grab from the BookBub list is No One Will Know by Rose Carlyle. It's the story of Eve Sylvester who takes on a job as a nanny to a wealthy couple on their private island. Puzzled by being given such a good job without experience, Eve soon discovers the real, sinister reason for the opportunity she's been given.

I love stories set on islands (I would, wouldn't I?), and I hope this story will not only give me the October mystery fix but also take me to tropical climes when the wind and rain are beating against my window here in London.

My final pick from the BookBub list is the latest novel, The Blue Hour by Paula Hawkins (the author of the worldwide bestseller, The Girl on a Train). This part of the blurb got me straight away:

"The story is set on a secluded Scottish island that’s only accessible to the mainland for 12 hours a day… and the dark secret it harbours, which connects the lives of three people."

Again, there is an island, added to which there are dark secrets and limited access to the mainland. This sounds a bit like Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie, but I'd guess it's more gruesome and fast-paced!

Finally, I'd like to introduce you to three mystery books written by my hugely talented author friends.

Blood and Sand by JJ Marsh is the 5th and final book in a thrilling series featuring Ursula Brown, a heroine with a mysterious past, as she dives into gripping adventures in each volume. In the last of this incredible series, which spans continents, starting in Brazil in Book 1 and ending up in Goa, the Southern tip of India, Ursula decides to end her seven-year run and meet her nemesis head-on.

"This is the end game and the stakes could not be higher. May the best woman win."

If you are looking for an excellent adventure series with fast-paced, intelligent plot, look no further than The Run and Hide series!

If you're a fan of fierce heroines, sharp intellect, and suspenseful plots that leave you on the edge of your seat,  Freddie P Peters' new Nancy Wu Crime Thriller will be the perfect read for you.

The third book in the series, Savaged Innocence, takes you on a fast-paced journey with Nancy as she bravely embarks on a mission to save two youngsters from ruthless traffickers.  Armed with nothing but her relentless determination and sharp intellect, she races against time, while battling formidable opponents with far-reaching influence.

Last, but by no means least, of my Halloween book recommendations is a cosy mystery by Debbie Young.

Death at the Old Curiosity Shop is the first book in a brand-new series, and perfect for all you lovers of Agatha Christie mysteries. I haven't yet had a chance to devour this story, but I have read all of Debbie's previous books and can only imagine how entertaining a tale this one will be.

"A picturesque village. A quaint high street... And a murder to solve. Alice's new life is off to a deadly start."

Need I say more?
